Today marks the start if National Nutrition Month 2012! I absolutley LOVE the theme this year- “Get Your Plate in Shape.” With the release of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines last June, doing away with the pyramid and making room for the plate- there couldn’t be a better fit for a theme! In case you have missed my previous posts about National Nutrition Month®, NNM is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. <— straight off the website!
Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate or in your bowl. Foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean protein foods contain the nutrients you need without too many calories. Over the course of your day, include foods from all the food groups, creating overall balance and variety of the food you consume.
A few initial tips for you to help jump start your plate into ultimate fit-ness!
Sounds easy enough, right? Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to provide you not only with healthy recipes, but as a resource of credible information- hoping to help you get your plate in shape. Even if it is already well-rounded, it’s not going to hurt to add in a few more tips and tricks to your brain files.
Not to forget, National Registered Dietitian Day is March 14th- so give your favorite RD a special hug that day- we appreciate it!
