Yesterday I was doing some research for an organization that I’ve recently taken apart of called Cuisine for Healing.  In a nutshell- this company provides meals and snacks to individuals suffering from cancer.  My role, of course, entails the dietetic piece, falling under several different areas of work, including defining CFH guidelines for the company’s food served.  While I was working on this project yesterday- I came across a rather interesting website called What’s on My Food? The site is run by the Pesticide Action Network (PAN), using resources from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and promoting the elimination of highly hazardous pesticides while offering solutions that protect people and the environment. In other words..and directly from the website:

What’s On My Food? is a searchable database designed to make the public problem of pesticide exposure visible and more understandable. We link pesticide food residue data with the toxicology for each chemical, making this information easily searchable for the first time.”

While browsing through about any food item you can think of, I noticed that the site also had a iPhone app!  Not to mention- it’s free.  No better price than FREE- right?  awesome. So, status post download, I spent literally an hour playing around on the app- and it has even made it’s way to the first screen on my iPhone- along with my epicurious app and Shopper app and Words with Friends- I give it two thumbs up.

Take a moment- download this- and keep it handy when shopping at your favorite market.  It is a good reminder of the various products found on the food we consume.  I know- although there is no proven superior nutritional benefits of organic versus conventional foods- there is a health risk associated with eating conventional foods in relation to the chemicals and pesticides etc,
..and this app definitly reminded this dietitian of that fact.
